ALD NanoSolutions, Inc. has announced the award of a $150,000 Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant from the National Science Foundation for “Functionalized Nanocoatings for Filler Adhesion to Rubber Using Atomic Layer Deposition.” This award is funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). The award, effective July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010, will be used to develop performance advantages for tires, environmental benefits for tire fabrication and better fuel efficiency for cars .  Nanometer coatings will provide better adhesion between light weight, high strength fillers, such as KevlarTM,  and the rubber tire matrix.

The patented process of depositing ALD films on polymers will allow the company to improved the surface compatibility, dispersion, and adhesion of polymer fillers used in a composite matrix.  The composition and thickness of the ALD films can be customized to functionalize polymer surfaces for a variety of applications. The research, done in partnership with the George Laboratories at the University of Colorado at Boulder, is an important part in the company’s continuing effort to demonstrate the value of atomic layer deposition for custom-designed composite materials.
